10x42, 10x50 or 12x50 binoculars – which should you choose?

10x42, 10x50 or 12x50 binoculars?

The choice is mainly about the balance between size, light transmission, magnification, and how steady you can keep the image. No single format is best for everything.

Model Strength Typically chosen for
10x42 binoculars Compact and versatile Stalking, general hunting, and longer trips
HD 10x50 binoculars Larger 50 mm objective with the same 10x magnification Stalking and observation in varying light
HD 12x50 binoculars More magnification at long distances Open fields, large terrains, and stationary observation

10x42 – the most compact choice

10x42 combines 10x magnification with a 42 mm objective. HuntersMarkets model has BAK-4 prisms, an IPX7 rating, and is nitrogen-filled. It is a good choice if the binoculars are often carried around and you want a balance between size and optics.

10x50 – same magnification, larger objective

10x50 retains 10x magnification but increases to a 50 mm objective. This provides greater light gathering than 42 mm and is relevant for stalking, for example, early or late in the day. In return, the format is larger than 10x42.

12x50 – more detail at a distance

12x50 provides 12x magnification and a 50 mm objective. The higher magnification makes details at long distances easier to see, but also makes small hand movements more visible. For longer observations, a tripod can be an advantage.

Which one should you choose?

Most versatile and compact: 10x42. More light at 10x: 10x50. Most magnification: 12x50.

Light, magnification and stability

Exit pupil is calculated by dividing objective diameter by magnification: 10x42 gives 4.2 mm, 10x50 gives 5.0 mm and 12x50 gives approximately 4.2 mm. This number alone does not determine image quality; optics, coatings, lighting and your eyes also matter.

Is 12x always better than 10x?

No. 12x makes the subject larger but also magnifies hand movement. 10x can therefore be easier to use handheld. Support or a compatible tripod can help with longer observations at 12x.

Can these binoculars measure distance?

These three models are binoculars for observation. For a measurement in metres, see our laser rangefinder for hunting. A rangefinder and binoculars serve different purposes.
